My Preferred Method For Preparing Sitz Bath Herbs
This way for preparing the herbs is similar to the directions I followed when I birthed my first child, and is the way that I have enjoyed preparing them for others. I feel it is a good potency and is what feels the best for me. Please follow the method that feels the best for You.
Using a pot that is about 3L, fill it about 3/4 of the way and sprinkle in 1/4 of the 3.5oz OwlHeart Sitz Herb package. (You may want to pour thepkg into a bowl to mix them more thoroughly if you cannot grab each herb by hand while separating into fourths).
Turn on the heat med-high and allow it to come Close to a boil, but not a full boil. Turn off the heat and cover.
Allow to steep for a minimum of 15 minutes. I suggest 20-30 minutes. But you can steep them for an hour or longer as well.
Strain, using cheesecloth or a fine strainer, into the basin being used. (I’ve used a very large mixing bowl and a tub like a bus bin. The basin has to be large enough for your bottom to sit in comfortably and have some liquid surrounding you).
Then add very warm (but not Hot-you don’t want to burn yourself) water and perhaps some cold (since the herb water is probably still very hot from steeping) to create enough liquid to immerse your bottom.
Sit and soak for 15-20 minutes.
You can do this up to 3X a day (and for 1-2 weeks).
Follow the same brew as above however strain the mixture with the strainer or cheesecloth into a large ball jar and refrigerate. (This will last 3 days in the fridge).
You can then use this in a peri bottle to squirt the bottom or to squirt onto a pad to sit on for a half hour. I recommend following what feels best for you-using it cold from the fridge or heating up a mug of water and combining them to make it warm. (I prefer warm because our bodies need heat replenished after birthing).
Using a sitz bath bath/tub--same preparation as above but add warm water to dilute some and put the brew in the sitz bath bag to then squirt/use on bottom. Follow your sitz bath tub directions.
Follow a recipe for a sitz tea (one posted below). This will create more brew (liquid) from your package of herbs. It is a bit less potent so is great for a person who is wanting a general regular cleansing.
Experiment: Try using different amounts of water and herbs to get the potency that feels best for you.
To make sitz "tea"
Boil 1 gallon of water
Add 2 cups herb mix
Cover and turn heat down to Low. Simmer for 15-20minutes.
Remove from heat and let steep for 1 hour
Pour tea through cheesecloth to remove herbs.
Add 4 Tablespoons Sea Salt (not regular table salt) and Stir well
Store 'tea' in fridge in closed container
Will keep for 4 days
To use: add 1cup of tea to hot water for sitz bath.
Or 4 cups of tea to a shallow bathtub of hot water.
Soak once or twice a day for 15minutes during the 2weeks after birth.
After soaking air dry or dry perineum with a hair dryer on low for 1 minute.
